Why won’t my fusebox reset?
Many modern fuse boxes include an RCD (residual current device) or MCD (mini circuit breaker) which is designed to trip or stop any power reaching already overloaded circuits, RCDs or MCDs automatically shift the on position to off.
Most homeowners with modern fuse boxes simply have to flick the switch back to the on position to make sure all power is returned. You might find yourself in a tricky situation when the RCD fuse doesn’t go back and you’re left wondering “why won't my fusebox reset?”
If you find this is the case at your home, please refrain from any DIY work as this can be very dangerous. As Allied Electrical Services are qualified electricians with many years of experience, we know how to conduct any investigatory work safely, therefore we always recommend you call in the professionals. Our experienced electricians know how to conduct investigations and fault finding in a safe manner to ensure occupants at the property, including the electrician, are safe while conducting checks on the fuse box.
Reasons my fuse box won't reset:
Having been called out to homes in Bristol for this very reason, we’ve found the predominant cause for a fuse box that wont reset is due to an overloaded circuit. This could be because of an extension cable which has been overloaded with electrical appliances, there may be a faulty or outdated electrical appliance which prevents the fusebox from resetting. A more complex cause could be with the electrical installation at your home due to modifications such as light, switch or plug socket installation which have recently taken place.
Finally, a fuse box which is resetting could be down to the RCD itself. Typically RCDs should last around 10 years or so and although they can be purchased quite easily from electrical trade stores, we highly recommend you leave replacing RCDs to a qualified electrician such as Allied Electrical Services. RCDs with different amp ratings are used in circuits controlling different areas in your home. The correctly rated amp but be installed in the right place to ensure the electrical system is hazard free.
